Let’s inject an instant burst of unexpected joy into your home by painting a few cute stripes along the edge of your door! It may be a tiny, playful detail, but trust me, it delivers a delightful pop of color that makes you smile every time you walk by. Happiness in the most unexpected place!

Now, set aside 30 mins and let’s add some fun color!

First, Sand

Give your door edge a light scuff sand, with a 180 or 220 grit sanding block. This will help remove the prior door paint’s sheen and help the new paint adhere better. Make sure to wipe it down after to remove dust.

Make a Plan

Once dry, play around with painters tape widths to figure out what size stripe you like. I’m using ScotchBlue 2in painters tape. I wanted a bold stripe since I’m only using 2 colors and plan on adding a fun bird motif later.

Tape it out

Now simply start at the top and work your way down. Place 3 pieces of tape back to back, horizontally, on the door’s edge. Be careful to make sure they are fairly level. Then remove the middle one and stick below the 3rd piece of tape to act as your spacer. Continue down the door with that same pattern, using the initial 2nd piece as your spacer each time.

When you’ve finished your tape stripes, you can vertically tape off the edge of the door on the front and back. I only taped one vertical side since the blue-green (Behr Watery) was the same color as the back of the door. Be sure to press down firmly on your tape edges to seal them.

Next, Paint

I used my small paint roller that was still wet from painting the door to quickly roll on my paint, but you can of course use a paint brush.

Important! Peel off the tape while the paint is still wet. You can clean up any wet paint bleed with a paper towel or a baby wipe.

Looks cool, right!

Now you can paint your second color if you are going for a 2 tone look. It’s hard to tell, but in the photo I’m covering the door’s white areas with the laundry room’s wall color – Sherwin Williams Heron Plume. These paintbrushes are great to have on hand for small detail work.

Tip:

-If you are only going to be painting 1 color stripe, try to only sand the areas where you will be painting.

Baby wipes can help clean up any paint bleed, though best to do while it’s still wet.

If the lines aren’t super crisp, embrace it. It says someone who loves this home hand painted this detail with love.

Once you’ve painted 1 door’s edge, you aren’t going to want to stop there. Now I see every door edge as a place to add a pop of color. Besides paint, you can use stencils, rubber stamps, washi tape, removeable decals or even peel and stick wallpaper!
